Many visitors to the Krabi province head for popular beach resort villages such as Ao Nang and Klong Muang. But for the slightly more intrepid, Ao Nang based tour operator, Krabi Spesialisten, offers day trips to destinations a little further afield, offering a glimpse into different areas of Thai culture. One such trip takes travellers to Wat Bang Riang, a temple complex with a beautiful white stupa built to house Buddha relics, as well as a community based orchid farm and an elephant camp.
Dawn broke on what would be another perfect day in Koh Lanta. It was with excited anticipation that I quickly showered and threw a few essentials, such as camera, towel, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses into my bag. Koh Rok, a magical Island I had heard so much about, was my destination for the day.
I wandered through the grounds of the Southern Lanta Resort, to its foreshore, where I, along with several other intrepid explorers met our tour organizer Krabi Spesialisten and the guide from Lanta Garden Hill speedboats. He introduced himself and efficiently directed us to our means of transport. Bobbing, just metres off shore were several sleek high speed power boats. I was assisted aboard by deckhands and our group was given a detailed explanation of what treats lay in store for the day ahead. My group was made up of visitors from all points of the globe, ranging in age from small children to seasoned travelers. It appeared that I was not the only one who was keen to experience the beauty and magic that Koh Rok is renowned for...
